YOUTH Art of Living Mindfully
In this time of social media, environmental anxiety, cyberbullying and financial uncertainty, youth are experiencing increasing rates of mental health challenges along with a lack of access to the therapeutic resources to help them navigate the real stressors they face.
The Youth Art of Living (Y-ALM) Mindfully course through BCALM has been developed by physicians, educators, psychologists and counsellors to respond to the mental health challenges experienced by people aged 13-19 years old. The material will help participants develop skills of self compassion, mindfulness, and resilience as they grow and change in their lives.
The course takes place weekly, over 8 weeks of 1.5 hours each, and focuses upon understanding stress reactivity vs response, mindful habit change, self compassion, loving kindness and mindfulness of body, thoughts, and emotions. Each Y-ALM course is facilitated by two mental health professionals trained in mindfulness based interventions for youth. Small and large group discussion, presentations and meditation practice are some of the varied ways the information and skills will be presented during each session.
The course is open to youth 13-19 years old although each cohort will be divided into 13-15 year olds or 16-19 year olds to better cultivate a container of trust and shared experience in the classes. While the Y-ALM course and materials are designed to assist youth in navigating their mental and physical health challenges, those suffering with severe mental health disease (severe depression, suicidality), active substance abuse, psychosis, and/or disruptive behavior are not appropriate for this offering and format.
Our first offering of the Youth Art of Living Mindfully takes place on Thursdays between May 6 – June 24, 2021 from 4:00-5:30 PM. (June 3rd class will be gathering at the same time but on June 1st)
These classes will be facilitated by Stephanie Marchal PsyD, MA, and Kate Steele RCC. Due to ongoing public health restrictions this course will take place online through Zoom and will have a maximum of 15 registrants per class. Each registrant will receive an intake interview with one of the facilitators, and any documents and links prior to the start of the class.
The cost of the Youth ALM course is $375 and covers facilitation and administrative support.
Private health insurance policies may reimburse this amount and a receipt will be provided once class starts.
